Meet Scooter. Late last week I got an email about a kitten in Morgan City who couldnt use his back legs and was tearing up his inner legs by dragging them on the ground. We got him transported to Nola and immediately checked out by a vet. I originally thought maybe he was hit by a car, but X-rays show that he was born this way. The vet said The kitten presented severe hind limb weakness presumably present since birth. X-rays show no evidence of trauma but do show an extreme case of what is essentially hip dysplasia. He is not completely paralyzed but is completely unable to walk because of malformed hips and severe muscle atrophy. The current question is the degree of neurologic involvement and the potential for a good quality of life long term. I brought in an animal rehab specialist and we are going to start to try to build muscles in his legs. We will determine his quality of life and whether or not he is a candidate for a wheelchair. We are cautiously optimistic about his future, but realize that if his quality of life is not there, we will have to make a tough decision. In the meantime, we continue to love on him and give him daily physical therapy. Feel free to stop by ZP. You can see him in the window, enjoying his soft bed in the sunshine. Michelle
