Meet a Band Member Beverly Buis - Bass Clarinet Beverly was born in Oklahoma but moved to Amarillo, Texas at the age of 5. From the age of 13 on she has considered Houston her home. Beverly graduated from Mayde Creek High School in 1994. She went on to receive an Associate’s Degree in Fine Arts with a concentration in Music from Blinn College. While attending the University of Houston she earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Social Sciences with a concentration is Psychology and Anthropology. Beverly has a busy schedule as a routing supervisor at a local food services distribution company. When she is not at the office, she is often working out important logistics for the band. Despite the crazy agenda and never ending to-do lists, Beverly says that family is always the most important thing. She refers to her brother as “the smart child”. She admires his dedication and accomplishments as an Aeronautical Engineer. Beverly also is extremely proud of her husband’s service in the Marine Corps. Beverly and her husband Jeff have been married for almost two years, however they have been together for seven. One of their very first dates was to Walt Disney World, so it was only appropriate to spend their Honeymoon surrounded by the magic of Disney World as well. Together they have three cats, Bubba, Titi, and Paul. Beverly feels it is important to note that Jeff named all of them. These truly are their children. Beverly says from time to time she will find herself yelling “Stop fighting with each other!” and “Leave her alone!” The one good thing is, unlike children, they don’t talk back or slam doors! Beverly joined the Lone Star Symphonic Band in February of 2004. As of May of that same year she was nominated as president of the band. When Beverly took over the band it consisted of 18 members. They had no rehearsal or concert venue, no music director and very little left in the annual budget. Today the band is comprised of roughly 75 talented musicians that have even gone on to start a jazz band, Dixie land band and multiple small ensembles. CrossPoint Community Church has become a perfect rehearsal and concert venue that we happily call home. The band is also lead by an amazing director and associate director! And get this…since Beverly has become president, the band has never seen red; nothing but progress over here! Not only has she helped the band, but she says the band has helped her with her fear of public speaking. Standing in front of such a friendly group of musicians and a warm audience has helped her feel more confident in front of large groups. On a personal note, I have been a part of the band for a few years now but only a part of the board for a few months. In those few months I have gotten a much better perspective on the band and its accomplishments. We have a bunch of incredibly talented musicians and directors, but none of what we have accomplished as a group could have happened without Beverly putting us in the position to excel. She spends her spare time on the phone, the computer and driving around the greater Houston area going over numbers, finding places to perform and contacting companies for donations for our silent auction tables. All of this is done behind the scenes and therefore often a thankless job. Beverly is the driving force of the band and I personally want to say thank you! Thank you for all that you do so that we can have a place to make music and others have a place to go to go to listen. *Get to know Beverly more with the fun ?s below!* What instrument do you play and why? I play the bass clarinet. I started on clarinet in beginning band because that was the instrument we had in the house (my dad had played clarinet when he was in school). My junior year of high school, I switched over to bass, and have been playing bass ever since. Career: Routing Supervisor at a local food services distribution company What are your hobbies other than the band? I serve on the board of directors, so a lot of the free time I have is working behind the scenes for the band. I do enjoy spending time with my husband as well! We travel a lot, and I scrapbook every vacation. I have been teaching myself how to crochet, so its blankets for everybody!! What did you want to be when you grew up? When I was a kid, I wanted to be a veterinarian, until I realized that part of the job would have to unfortunately put animals down sometimes. I just couldnt do it! What artists or bands do you enjoy listening to? I listen to all types of music, and really do not have any specific favorite genre. I do listen to a lot of Mumford and Sons, Walk Off the Earth, Lindsey Stirling, and various movie soundtracks. If you could see any artist, dead or alive, who would you see? I will admit, I have seen Barry Manilow in concert twice, and Elton John in concert once. I would love to see either of them again! Id also like to see John Williams conduct an orchestra. If you could travel anywhere in the world where would you go? I would love to travel to Germany, Norway, England, Ireland, and Australia. What is your favorite ice cream flavor Sweet cream with almond slices is my favorite ice cream What is your favorite home cooked meal?
