Meet the Amazing Topito Cultural Group from Botswana More often than not, the beautiful country of Botswana is often lost when talking African music but a visit to the multi-ethnic country reveals a vibrant music scene and a musical culture rich like other parts of Africa.Music is a large part of Botswana culture, and includes popular and folk forms. Botswana church choirs are common nationwide. Music education is an essential component of the Botswana educational system, and children of all ages are taught traditional songs and dances. One of the most creative minds in Botswana music is the young lad Mmusi Dikgole who goes by the name Topito and whose group Topito group has been churning out impressive music. With two traditional albums to his name, Topito eschews African culture through his music and dance. Formerly a member of the Mogwana Traditional Troupe, he shot to fame after going solo harnessing the different experiences good, bad and ugly to becoming a successful musician. At Mogwana we were many and just danced for food during events or occasions, he recalls laughing. He added that Mogwana is a voluntary group aimed at keeping the youth away from mischief; so there was nothing much to expect. He once represented Botswana in China musically while he was still at Itsoseng Private School where he was a traditional dance group lead singer.
