Meet your farmer John Woodward at the Big Stone Gap Farmers - TopicsExpress

Meet your farmer John Woodward at the Big Stone Gap Farmers Market. From Jonesville, Virginia, he’s been farming for over 50 years. Although he worked in the mines until the mines shut down years ago, he farmed even then and did a little bit of everything to make money. Now, farming takes up all his time. I’ve never seen so much corn growing in a corn field alongside other vegetables growing. I also didn’t know that there were so many different types of corn, or green beans for that matter, until I became part of the farmers market. John took us around showing us row after row of corn, Silver Queen, Golden Corn, Peaches and Cream, and there’s a Hickory Cane! Then we saw beans and beans and more beans! Half runners, Blue Ribbon, 6-Week Beans or better known as the Peanut Bean and a favorite, Turkey Craw! Mr. Woodward is holding a Logan Giant he’s seeding for next year’s garden. Besides seeing rows of corn and beans, we saw potatoes, okra, sweet and green peppers and watermelons. Soon, cantaloupes and cabbage will be ready for the market. One thing I’ve noticed about the farms I’ve visited, the land is well taken care of. There’s nothing lazy about farming. Our farmers take pride in their farms and in turn, the Big Stone Gap Farmers Market is able to provide the best in in fresh quality food for our communities. ~Shirley Smith, Big Stone Gap Farmers Market
