Meeting with HKETO, New York Oct 09, 2014 at 10:00am, our group “New Yorkers Supporting Hong Kong” had a formal meeting with the Director of HKETO-NY, Mr. Steve Barclay, Deputy Director, Mr. Paul Cheung, and Head of Communication & Public Relations, Ms. Claudia Yeung. We believe that we are the first oversea group meeting with the HK officials. Through the organization and coordination of multiple rallies, panels, teach-in, and discussions in the North East region of US, we’ve collected and summarized the voices of the people in regard of the current Umbrella Movement in Hong Kong, from both HongKongers and supporting non-HongKongers. We presented and expressed the strong concerns from the people. 1. We do not represent any particular organization, party, or group. We see the need to deliver the comments and opinions of the oversea people back to HK. 2. We requested Mr. Barclay to bring our message back to HK, and Mr. Barclay agreed. 3. We expressed that the current movement is no longer a local HK affair, but indeed a global issue and the World population is concerned. 4. The general theme is that both HongKonger and non-HongKonger support the pursue of Freedom and Democracy in Hong Kong 5. The promise of “Equal and Universal Suffrage” is the goal, and not only is written on the Basic Law Article 45, but also in the Article 21 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. 6. We condemn the use of excessive police force against the peaceful, civil, and gentle protestors in Hong Kong. We urge Hong Kong Government to exercise restraint, and do not deploy force more than minimally necessary. 7. We expressed that international students and exchange students from Hong Kong are worrying about the threatening freedom and rights, and that many students who plan to return Home following the conclusion of their education are now worried of their future. 8. Shared from some of the American fellows who visited Hong Kong as a tourist, many of them fell in love with Hong Kong, and would like to visit Hong Kong again. They expressed the worrisome of the current situation, and would not want to see the deterioration of freedom in Hong Kong. 9. We are very disappointed to the HK government’s decision to cancel the dialogue that was scheduled on Friday. “The will of the people shall be the basis of the authority of government” (Article 21, UDHR). We urge that the Hong Kong Government to restart an equal & good-faith dialogue with the student representatives As Soon As Possible. Below are the three requests we urged the Hong Kong Government to exercise: 1. Equal and good-faith dialogue with students; honor and execute the agreed terms 2. Withdraw the restrictive National People’s Congress white paper 3. Constitutional reform to full democracy with true universal suffrage 1. 政府與學生平等對話,並落實對話內容 2. 撤回人大政改方案 3. 落實真普選 Mr. Barclay responded to the concerns of the people, and he expressed that he is aware of the current situation in Hong Kong. He shared his vision of the ultimate Freedom and Democracy in Hong Kong. He wishes Hong Kong to success, and he plans to return back to Hong Kong for good. He is confident that the two-sides will come across a mutually agreeable plan of action, and he is confident that the police will do their best to protect the freedom and rights of the HongKongers. Finally, Mr. Barclay promised that he will deliver our messages back to the Government of Hong Kong. The result of this meeting is encouraging. Although we regret of what Mrs. Carrie Lam announced earlier today, but we hope that Mr. Barclay will be able to deliver our concerns back to Hong Kong Government.
