Melaka plans to grow date palms at every mosque. The Melaka state government plans to grow date palm trees at every mosque in the state and develop it as an agro-based product for domestic and overseas markets. State Agriculture and Entrepreneur Development Committee chairman Datuk Hasan Abdul Rahman said if the effort is a success the products would be sold at the local farmers markets or overseas at the Agrobazar in Singapore. The plan would be a collaborated effort between the Federal Agriculture Marketing Authority (Fama) and the Melaka Agriculture Department. At present, agro-based products, such as fruits and snacks are in high demand and popular in Singapore, he told reporters after opening the Melaka State Farmers Market Carnival, here Sunday. He urged farmers and agricultural entrepreneurs in Melaka to seize the opportunity in taking their agricultural products into the global market which would bring lucrative income. Meanwhile, Melaka Fama Director Mohd Nawi Othman said the agency is targeting RM20 million in sales from the farmers markets throughout Melaka this year compared with RM18.2 million in the previous year. From January to August this year, a total of RM13.2 million was collected from 455 dealers trading in the 19 farmers markets in the state, he said. To achieve the sales target we have planned a range of activities to attract the crowd and we are looking into a grocery saving programme which focuses on raw materials such as poultry, meat and fish, he said.
