Melbournes Junction Oval will be turned into a major sporting and community precinct under a re-elected Vic Coalition Govt with a $59 million project that will benefit a range of sporting clubs and community groups. Joined Premier Denis Napthine and Minister for Sport and Recreation Damian Drum and Liberal candidate for Albert Park Shannon Eeles at Junction Oval to announce the exciting and ambitious project. This will be a collaborative project involving Cricket Australia Cricket Victoria, AFL, St Kilda Football Club, the City Of Port Phillip and local sporting clubs. It includes a $20 million contribution from a re-elected Coalition Government with funding also coming from Cricket Victoria, the St Kilda Football Club, AFL and the City of Port Philip. It will bring the best in elite and community sport to the iconic Junction Oval and its surrounding precinct. It will provide the playing and administrative home for Victorian cricket including the State men’s and women’s cricket squads. The oval will be completely redone to make it a first class ground while a world-class centre of excellence will be built adjacent to Junction Oval to cater for cricket as well as other sports. In addition, one of Victoria’s oldest sporting clubs, the St Kilda Cricket Club, will have upgraded facilities and benefit from the elite facilities built for Cricket Victoria. it will also provide a solution for the ongoing issue of the availability of the MCG for major events and AFL football through February and March after the international cricket season finishes. With Junction Oval to be re-established as the second first-class cricket venue in the State, the Coalition, if elected will progress talks it has initiated with Cricket Victoria and Cricket Australia to establish a third first-class venue in regional Victoria.
