Melissa Harris Perry Delivers Heartbreaking Tribute to Unarmed Black Men Killed by Police - MSNBC 8-16-14 - ( MSNBC ) - MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry devoted much of her show Saturday to the fatal shooting of Michael Brown and the unrest that has followed in Ferguson, Missouri. But perhaps the most moving part of her broadcast came when she looked at the hundreds of other unarmed black men who are killed by police every year. Harris-Perry began by solemnizing reading off just some of the names of those men before arriving at Michael Brown. “In the past decade alone, these men and hundreds of others have lost their lives to police,” she said. She cited a recent story that said local police report to the FBI the killing of at least 400 people per year. “From 2006 to 2012, a white police officer killed a black person at least twice a week in this country,” Harris-Perry said. Harris-Perry drew a parallel between the current situation in Ferguson and the Dred Scott case of 1857 that originated in nearby St. Louis. Scott sued the United States for his freedom, but was rejected by the Supreme Court. In his decision, Chief Justice Roger Taney said he had “no rights which the white man was bound to respect.” youtu.be/H0th_Wm2oNQ
