Melissa and West Update 9/22/14 Happy 4 months little man! My small fry, West, has made it through the first third of his first year. While it is still a challenge for me to balance Melissas needs and Wests needs, it has been awesome getting to know West and seeing the kind of child he is becoming. Every morning when West sees me or his grandparents, he treats us all to his ear to ear toothless smiles. I am loving that West is becoming more interactive. His eyes are always so open and engaged. He uses his smile to start interactions with me and his grandparents. West is becoming more and more a little person. I am so grateful to have West in my life, with all his little coos, big smiles, leg kicks, finger sucking, diaper changes, and repeat late night wake up sessions. Love you little buddy. Wests mother, Melissa, is also reaching a bench mark, of sorts. It has been nearly a month since Melissa went to UCSF to have her clots treated. Since then Melissa has remained infection free, giving her poor immune system a break. Almost all of Melissas clots, except the clot in her arm, have resolved. Melissa is still not as responsive as she used to be. In large part this is because of the pain medications she had been on as well as muscle relaxants to treat her spasms. If Melissa remains infection and clot free, the soonest we could have her hydrocephalous (fluid build up in the brain) treated would be around the start of the new year. Until then, Melissa will likely continue to have her responsiveness and capacity for movement impaired. This impairment is temporary and should resolve quickly once the hydrocephalous is treated. I appreciate everyones patience in waiting with us for Melissa to recover. Like Melissa we all just have to drive on, one day at a time.
