Mellanie Ouida Jones Shuman, 91, of McAlester, died January 31, 2014 at her residence. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 3 at Bishop Chapel of Memories with Rev. Rodney Briggs officiating. Interment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery. Service arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service. Born February 2, 1922 in Hartshorne, she was a daughter of James Andrew and Beulah Abigail Mackey Jones. She attended Savanna School and Bacone College at Muskogee. She married J.B. “Brownie” Shuman April 18, 1942 at McAlester, Oklahoma. Mellanie retired from the Oklahoma Employment Security Commission where she worked for 31 years. Mellanie enjoyed bowling and she and her husband Brownie loved ballroom dancing. She was a member of the Fortnightly Ohoyohoma Indian Women’s Club. She was a member of First Baptist Church. She is survived by her sister-in-law: Pauline Kinyon of McAlester; brother-in-law: Vestal Hazlewood of McAlester; nephews: Terry Kinyon and wife, Pam of McAlester, Buck Jones of Arpelar, Glen Jones and wife, Carol of Arpelar, Charles Jones and wife, Barbara of Ft. Worth, Texas, Jim Jones and wife, Ann of McAlester, Jim Wilkins and wife, Erma of McAlester, Kimmel Jones and wife, Carol of Arizona. Also, nieces: Jane Sherrill of Hartshorne, Mary Tucker of Little Rock, Arkansas, Celia Scherman and husband, Bill of McAlester, Elizabeth Parsons and husband, Bill of Broken Arrow, Dianne Malicoat of McAlester; and special caregivers: Barbara McClellan, Margaret Murdaugh, Roena O’Kelley, Mary Nell Hamilton. She was preceded in death by her parents: James Andrew and Beulah Abigail Mackey Jones; her husband: J.B. “Brownie” Shuman; brothers and sisters: James Oscar Jones, Malcolm Everett Jones, Raphael Wilson Jones, Marcella Francielle Jones Wilkins, Aurilla Christine Jones Hazlewood; and nephews: James Ronald Shuman, Joseph Michael Shuman, John Charles Shuman, Wayne Kinyon, Buddy Sherrill, James David Hazlewood, and Joe Wilkins. Pallbearers will be Buck Jones, Glen Jones, Jim Jones, Bill Scherman, Mark Hopper, Butch Mellor, Dennis Malicoat, and Shawn Hazlewood.
