Members of Carrickfergus Junior Gateway Club are to gain an insight into life in the world of retail as they visit the local branch of Sainsbury’s today (Thursday). The move is part of the Sainsbury’s ‘Youth Can’ initiative, which supports youth clubs and communities all over Northern Ireland. The Sainsbury’s team are welcoming 18 members from ages 16-25 into the store for an insight into the different roles involved in the day to day running of Sainsbury’s, as well as the responsibilities each colleague has. The club, which was established in 1987, has provided a place for children in the local area who have learning disabilities to get involved in sports and art, as well as provide a social scene for children and a platform to make friends for life. Toni Bates, Sainsbury’s Carrickfergus Youth Forum Ambassador said: “We have been aware of the Carrickfergus Junior Gateway Club for a long time and are delighted to finally be linking up with them and provide this exclusive insight into our store. “In line with our Sainsbury’s ‘Youth Can’ initiative we have the opportunity to provide this type of experience to our local Gateway club and give them an insight as to what it takes to work in such a large retail outfit. We know that the guys mightn’t have had an opportunity like this before so it’s great to be able to give something back and help out such a special organisation in our local community.” Jackie Pollock, the leader in charge of Carrickfergus Junior Gateway club added: “We are delighted that Sainsbury’s have chosen us for this project. The aim of our club is to promote the independence and life skills of our members. The opportunity to show our young people behind the scenes of Sainsbury’s removes a lot of the apprehension for those about to enter the workplace themselves and we look forward to working closely with them in the future.”
