Memein it through Ramadan #5: Each moment is pregnant with meaning. Our task is to tune ourselves to the right frequency to be able to hear the message. The universe is not designed to give us what we want, but rather presents to us that which we need to know in order to grow. Success is not having the greatest number of possessions or being recognised in the street, nor is it found when our lives are organised in exactly the way we want them to be. When the storm arrives, and indeed there will be storms, do not collapse into a bunker and frantically hold on until it passes, but rather transcend it by employing your knowledge that there is no agency in this universe but The One, The All Embracing, The Merciful. Sometimes, as we are accustomed to darkness, the light He exposes us to temporary stings our eyes, as a nourishing meal may be lacking in flavour when judged by our tongues that were raised upon processed products and colourful chemicals. The storm is your workout, a sign that you are ready for development, and an opportunity to demonstrate your excellence to the universe. There is very little we can do to change the events that take place in our lives, and if our happiness is dependent upon the actions of others or the circumstances we find ourselves in, it is unlikely that contentment will be much more than a fleeting phase in our lives. However, if we accept that the storm does not define us, but rather that we have the capacity through our reactions to control the effect of the storm upon our lives, then our inner peace can no longer be stolen by circumstance, and when even the most ferocious winds whirl around us, nothing can shake the immovable foundation of faith upon which human excellence is built.
