Memo for December 15, 2014 - Semester 1, Week 16A Dear PMA Parent or Student, This is the last week of lessons before our Winter Break, which begins officially on Sat., Dec. 20. Many teachers will be teaching makeup lessons that day, so check with your teacher if you have a Sat. lesson. At this time of year, its difficult to stick to practice routines but music should be an enjoyable part of your holidays. Please encourage your child to play for family and friends, make a CD of current pieces as a gift for others, or perhaps play at a religious service or at a nursing home. This is a time of year when we can all appreciate the power of music and the fruits of our labors. Please read below about everything going on at PMA both now and after the break, and enjoy your break. Happy Holidays! Carnegie Library Concert This Sunday PMA students will perform at the Carnegie Library in Oakland, in the Reading Room, on Sun., Dec. 21, from 2 to 3pm. This concert is open to flutes and string players who will play our holiday music as an ensemble. The slots for pianists are all filled. We would like to have a rough idea of how many of you are planning to attend the concert, so please either respond to this e-mail or call PMA at 412-429-2122 to let us know if youre coming. Performers should plan to arrive in the Reading Room, on the first floor, no later than 1:45pm. There is info on our website about discounted parking in the lot behind the Carnegie Museum. There is a letter there that you can print out to show the parking lot attendant, under Happenings and then Special Events. Dress for the library concert is your nicest holiday dress-up clothes. Chamber Orchestra Auditions Congratulations to all who auditioned this weekend! You can expect to hear by the end of this week whether you were accepted. We can still accommodate more players, so if you didnt make the auditions but would still like to participate, please let us know. We will arrange an audition for you this week. Rehearsals will begin on Jan. 5, 2015. There is a good chance that car-pools from the South Hills to Squirrel Hill and back are now being organized for those who are interested. Winter Break PMA will be closed for Winter Break beginning on Sat., Dec. 20. We will resume regular lessons and group and music ed classes on Fri., Jan. 2, 2015. Let the Music Flow Project Are you still working on your water drops? It seems like the students at PMA South are doing an amazing job - their bulletin board is full and has had to be extended. Remember that the project goes until the end of this semester and those who have practiced every day for the whole semester can look forward to their rubber ducky. Rethinking Genius Blog Please check out the latest post, which deals with the fact that there are no shortcuts in musical training. Just google Rethinking Genius: A Suzuki Method Blog. New Parking at East Beginning Jan. 1, 2015, the parking situation at PMA East will change slightly. The church will be taking over five more parking spaces off of Darlington Rd., at the top of the driveway along the fence for evening hours. That means that those who come for lessons at 4pm or later can use those spaces. What will not change is the use of the large parking lot by the athletic field. PMA is not permitted to use any of those parking spaces, ever. The school has recently complained about finding us there, and we dont want anyone to be towed. No More Groups or Music Ed Classes Till Jan. We have suspended our groups and music ed classes until after the holidays. They will begin again on Sat., Jan. 3, 2015. New Time for Choir in January Beginning on Jan. 3, we will have our Choir rehearsals at PMA Carnegie at 10:15am on Saturdays. We are hoping that will be a more convenient time and that more students will join. Elise Henkleman, our choir director, has great choral skills and many fun ideas and is looking forward to sharing them with a bunch of children who like to sing! Concerto Workshop Jan. 17 & 18 We are very excited to once again offer a concerto workshop for our students and other young musicians from the community who are studying concerti. The workshop will take place at Wallace Memorial Presbyterian Church over two days this year and will include opportunities for piano students to play their Bk. 3 sonatinas with a professional string quartet; violin, viola, and cello students in Bk. 4, 5, or 6 to play their concerti in a group with the orchestra; and more advanced students of all instruments to perform a solo concerto with our professional chamber orchestra. Jack Kurutz will conduct the orchestra. Please ask your teacher if this is something you can do. Winter Concert in February Our annual Winter Concert for group classes and the PMA Chamber Orchestra will take place at the Winchester-Thurston School on Sat., Feb. 21, 2015, at 4:00pm.
