Memo on Delays to the Start of School On a fairly frequent - TopicsExpress

Memo on Delays to the Start of School On a fairly frequent basis, the local schools are now delaying the opening of their school days due to the cold temperatures. This is something that has seldom happened in the past and puts us into uncharted territory. Although we will not delay the opening of Homestead School due to temperature extremes, we do realize that the local districts have different considerations than we, due to the running of their senior high buses in the pre-dawn hours and students waiting in the open at bus stops. And we cannot imagine the pressure that local administrators are experiencing from all sides, not the least of which is the new weather anxiety caused by the naming of winter storms and a constant stream of “warnings” and “advisories” issued by the weather services. This situation starts to create a set of expectations and demands that tends to supersede the authority of responsible decision makers, leaving any measures of common sense in shambles. We certainly have the safety of our students foremost in our minds as much as the next school. And we always encourage you to make your own decision on sending your children to school if you do not feel comfortable with the local roads. However, if these delays keep happening due, not to road conditions, but simply due to the temperature—and next week has three days forecast to start in the minus single digits—we would suggest that the families of bus students try to organize carpools. A lot of instructional time is being missed by our bus students, and the instruction of all students is compromised by the sheer number of students arriving late and disrupting the day and disrupting the schedule of academic lessons. We will understand if carpooling is logistically impossible on a given day, but please see what you can do, and let us know if we can assist in any way.
