Memories of Main Street:- One of my first memories would have been in about 1957 or 1958...Mum pushing me in the stroller up the street to the shops. When my brother came along, she had a cane pram with a dicky seat for me. I remember falling out of it once. I must have been about two. I remember going into the PDF, which was the olden days equivalent of a healthfood shop (Preserved and Dried Foods)...I remember Mum getting a paper bag of dried apricots from a pull-out bin, using a scoop. I had never tasted dried apricots before, but discovered the most delicious tangy, chewy treats!!! They werent soft and juicy, back then, but tough and very tangy. Mum was probably buying them to make either apricot and walnut loaf or apricot jam. Yum! Other shops I recall back then were the Delicatessen, which was very mysterious, and we never went in there. The foods smelled so strange, but when I grew up, I learned to love them all!!!! I remember Mr Sings furniture shop opposite the station, and Rubos shoe repairs. Winns, of course....My first two shop-bought dresses were bought from Winns when I was thirteen....There was the old Council Chambers where ladies had cooking classes...the paper shop, which was what we called the newsagent, before our language became more Americanised. There was Moran and Cato, where Mum bought devon in slices the size of a bread and butter plate, with real peas and carrot in it. A treat to take home would be a meringue from the cake shop...
