Memphis Animal Services (MAS) Director James Rogers informed the public last night that shelter hours were going to be changed due tobudgetary cuts; however, it was revealed that no staff or paid staffing hours will be cut. What IS being cut are the available hours for the general public to go to the shelter to adopt. Hours will be 12pm-5pm, Tue-Sat, for the general public to come and adopt a pet. Translations: MAS will open one hour later than before and not have extended hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays for the general public. Oh, and lets not forget this eliminates Memphis Pets Alive!s Wag Along Tuesday photography/ networking efforts and Thursdays Yappy Hour in the evenings - an event that Rogers indicated early in his presentation was highly successful. For potential adopters that WORK a basic 9 to 5 job? Screw you. And the animals. For those rescue and advocy groups that hold a basic day job AND want to VOLUNTEER your precious time photographing the animals to help increase adoption rates? Screw you. And the animals. Additionally, MAS will also now be open* on Sunday and Monday - but ONLY for those who have lost their dog and want to look at the facility. *Being open means these two days will now count as business days, which will be counted toward a stray dogs 72 hr hold period and if you cant figure out why thats incredibly harmful to the effort of increasing live release rates, ask me. Ill tell you. Screw the animals. These new hours go into effect August 1st. The Advisory board for MAS has made a motion that this not go forward but they have no authority to override. The city does. The public has the ability to move the city. It has been done before. What can you do? Please go LIKE the SOS Memphis Facebook page to keep up with this story and other issues at Memphis Animal Services. Sign their petition. Be a voice for those who do not have one. Less hours for the public/rescues to adopt is NOT the answer.
