Mental health deserves to be debated in a mature manner (which can be both serious and include humour). It’s a debate that needs to embrace all the nuances of the issue and of the many views held – positive and negative. It is not helped by those, even those who want to improve the way mental health issues are seen more widely in society, who illustrate their views with juvenile language (often limited by black/white, right/wrong, blinkeredness) – this only pushes back the debate, encourages continued entrenchment of negative opinions, engrains bias, discrimination and stigma. Mental health is too important to be treated with such flippancy, which just condemns those suffering with mental health difficulties to further misery.
