This is the first group of idols ‘type’, produced by SM Entertainment and their success is beyond comprehension, continuing their musical successes while winning numerous awards. Their concerts are quickly complete and their fans are mostly girls, as in the drama Reply 1997, could follow them everywhere and be very devoted. H.O.T will be the precursor of Hallyu wave. They are known in countries such as China, or Taiwan, their popularity having crossed the oceans. Their first success was -Candy- in 1996, followed by many others like - Happiness- -Hope- or -We Are The Future- . Members are recruited on the street (Kangta), or after a dance contest (Jang WooHyuk).The other members, Moon HeeJun, Lee Jaewon, Tony An spend several auditions. A certain Andy Lee will also join the group, but the disapproval of his parents, makes him back to the United States. Andy will begin his career later in 1998 with the group Shinhwa. The groups fans are still waiting for a possible return of H.O.T, more than 10 years after their separation in 2001, but for now they all pursue their solo careers. Other groups of the 90s-early 2000 have also made their comeback recently, after an absence more or less long. Such as G.O.D, Koyote, FTTS or even Shinhwa. And the singer Lee SunHee who celebrated her 30-year career !! Even if her name means nothing to you, you probably know some of her songs that served as OST for dramas like My Girlfriend is a Nine Tails’ Fox or movie like The King and The Clown. In short, if for some the 90s seem very distant, some songs can not be unknown to you. Indeed, several groups have made covers of success from the initial generation idols as Super Junior with -Happiness- originally sung by H.O.T or - Sunset Glow- by BigBang which is a cover of -Red Sunset- by Shinhwa (which was already a cover of a song by Lee Moon Sae in 1988) At concerts or special performances a lot of groups perform hits such as -Candy- by H.O.T, -Run To You- by DJ DOC or -Hot- by 1tym. The wave of nostalgia not only affects the music. Indeed, we have seen the success of Reply 1997 (with Jung Eunji, Seo InGuk Hoya and even Eun Jiwon of Sechs Kies), the Spin Off Reply 1994 ( with Min DoHee of Tiny G, her character is an unconditional fan of Seo Taiji, limit, stalkeuse - and Baro, of B1A4), in which we can get a glimpse of the popular musical groups and different historical events of the time. But also, more recently, the TV Show EXO 90: 2014 Time Slip on Mnet, where the group met artists of the 90s, H.O.T, G.O.D, Shinhwa or even Jung SungMo in the first episodes. EXO’s members and guests take the opportunity to (re)discover the songs that made the success of these artists of the first generation, but also discuss about their working conditions (how was the filming of music video or the use of walkmans, audio tapes etc) and make comparisons between the 90s’ idols and EXO. Every week, a member made an EXO’s version of a guest’s song, that he chose.
