Mentor Coordinator Posting: Mentor Coordinator position Classification Student work position Department: Economics Dept./SAIL program Opens: Currently open Closes: Applications due 3/10/14 Salary: $10.00 Per Hour Work Location: Springfield School District Program Information: The Summer Academy To Inspire Learning (SAIL) program partnered with the Springfield School District to invite applications for a 12 hr/wk, mentor coordinator position. The SAIL program is the University of Oregon’s largest outreach pipeline program serving under-represented, low-socio-economic students in preparing for college. Approximately 200 students are served during our summer camp programs. During the academic school year we offer a mentoring program in local area schools. The Springfield School District partnership includes 2 high schools, 4 middle schools, UO SAIL program and LCC Rites of Passage program. Mentoring program will be hosted in each of these 6 schools in Springfield. Purpose of Position: Assist school counselors and SAIL Director with the development and supervision of a near-peer mentoring program. Work hours will be during the secondary school hours 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday specified by the on-site supervisor. This is a student position. Because this position works less than half time, it is not eligible for employee benefits. This recruitment is open to any applicant who meets the qualifications listed below. TO QUALIFY YOU MUST HAVE: Applicants must be sophomore or higher level college student able to start April 1, 2014 and commit through spring term 2015 Applicant will preferably have prior experience working with high school age students, preferably some mentoring or tutoring experience, be a self-starter and self-motivated, able to supervise and give direction to high school students, assist high school students with their professional development, able to work one on one or in group setting, able to communicate with staff and student families, field questions from students and families, have a diversity awareness background. Bi-lingual would be preferable. Applicant will need valid driving record and willing to transport students in city vehicle. Position is subject to criminal background check. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: This position will involve working in a middle or high school assisting the school counselor and the SAIL Director in developing and supervising a near-peer mentoring program. Approximately 8 hours a week will be spent supervising middle and high school students and 4 to 6 hours of prep time. Supervision time will include: interviewing and matching mentoring/mentee pairs, training high school students on mentoring objectives and policies, overall supervision of mentoring sessions as well as special events, checking-in with the high school students after mentoring sessions, leading group activities, assisting students with personal awareness and identity issues, offering feedback and suggestions, providing consistent and clear communication with parents and maintaining professional clear and frequent communication with school counselor, to include updates on current needs and concerns of program, staff, parents and students. Prep time duties will include: Checking in and updating the school counselor, assisting with preparing the content for future mentoring sessions, follow-up with students, families, host family meetings, paperwork and data collection as assigned. WORKING CONDITIONS: This position requires ability to work in either small or large group setting, flexibility with location, occasional travel to various schools. Work environment may include high noise and activity levels.
