What influences mentors to leave or stay in programs? How can we increase the odds that mentors will go the distance? Join us as we explore drivers behind mentor retention and discuss ways to improve the mentor experience. We will review findings from the chapter on Mentor Recruitment and Retention in the Handbook of Mentoring, including factors influencing retention, barriers to retaining mentors and recommendations for program practices. We will also take a look at new research by Molly Frendo, State Program Director of Volunteer Systems at the University of Minnesota Extension’ Center for Youth Development, on ways that building relationships within mentoring programs can enhance retention, and explore the use of technology solutions to expand community-building and volunteer support. We will dig deeper in best practice applications by hearing from staff at two organizations that have improved volunteer retention in their mentoring programs - Amy Pomeranz Essley, Chief Program Officer at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana, and Tammy Pearson, Executive Director at Project Leadership.
