Mentorship Monday: Peter Beasecker : Brooks Oliver Peter Beasecker, Syracuse, NY: It is difficult to identify the moment when a teacher morphs positions and inhabits the role of mentor. It is marketedly different terrain, deeper and more potent; it is the exception rather than the rule. Fortunate to be considered a mentor by perhaps a small handful of individuals, the unifying trait among them is their uncomprising dedication and willingness to learn. Brooks Oliver stands out as a life-long learner, one who recognizes the power of listening and strength of questioning. His insatiable work ethic and big heart will serve him well as he further defines his voice as an artist and educator. My life is richer to have had the pleasure of helping him along this journey. Brooks Oliver, Helena, MT : “Peter convinced me to switch my undergrad major from the financially stable studies of mechanical engineering to much more enjoyable studies of ceramics. It wasn’t until Peter asked me to be his glazing assistant that I felt like I truly got to know him though. Throughout hours of glazing hundreds of pieces over the course of several exhibitions, I got to pick the mind of an artist I greatly admired and got to spend time with. It was during this time that Peter taught true craftsmanship and care that has and forever will guide my hand in the making of my own work. Peter could have chosen anyone, but he chose me, even going so far as to fly me across the country to work with him – In short, he really invested in me and that means the world to me. As a teacher, Peter taught me how to be competent in the technical side of ceramics, he passed to me his love for clay, he honed my ability to express my ideas, and as a mentor, he spent countless hours providing advice and he provided me with the all the right tools to make work that satisfies me. Most of our relationship has focused on art and I think it important to note that I have never felt that he was trying to tell me what to do, or what he would do if he were faced with some of my decisions. Rather, he gave me insights so I could better understand various aspects of choices or decisions I needed to make along the way. While Peter Beasecker is one of the best teachers and mentors I have had, I am perhaps most blessed to simply call him my friend.”
