Meray Hum Aziz Hum Watano Let us consider the events in Egypt. The Army has taken over. President Muhammad Mursi has been overthrown. A new constitution is to be framed and new elections held to empower a successor civilian government. Does all sound familiar? For us in Pakistan this sequence of events should not occasion any surprise. We have been there before and seen it all. It is like a bad dream. Only it is happening in another continent. What is the lesson? What Tahrir Square gives; it can also take back. The public approval of the trial of Hosni Mubarak was approved by millions gathered in Tahrir Square in Cairo. Mursi and his Muslim Brotherhood were granted legitimacy and a chance to shape Egypt’s destiny. President Mursi fumbled and has lost his chance. It is said that power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely. Mursi had his chance, he has lost it. It sends shivers down my spine. Nawaz Sharif and his boys and the motley crowd of civilians flexing their muscles should take heed. The military does not take over. It is forced to take over. Brace yourself. Settle into a comfortable sofa. Soon too soon you will hear the address, “Meray Hum Aziz Hum Watano”
