Merbok MAGIC - 19 Aug 2013 was a special day for the entire Expedition group as the Berus Mata Buaya (Bruguiera hainesii, IUCN Global Red List - Critically Endangered) was spotted by Encik Razali Salam. Not one tree, but a total of 3 trees (two locations). On the following day (20 Aug 2013), Prof Maketab Mohamed (MNS President, UTM Professor) Dr Mohd Nasir Husin (FRIM), and Prof J. E. Ong (MNS, USM) led an expert team with Amidun (our superb professional tree climber), FRIM/Kedah Forestry colleagues and other supporting staff, to verify, confirm and to collect flowering/fruiting materials for the various herbaria. Razali Salam (now at UMT, Trengganu; formerly from UKM - pls correct me if I got it wrong) was also credited earlier with the discovery of a Berus Mata Buaya tree at Setiu Wetlands, Trengganu. With this discovery of the Berus Mata Buaya at Merbok mangroves, among many other unexpected and delightful scientific discoveries, this expedition was indeed very successful. We hope that these salient findings can help convince policy makers to confer more protection to this uniquely Malaysian Heritage!
