Mercer County, NJ Boy Dies of Enterovirus Eli Waller, a four-year old boy from Hamilton Township, NJ died on September 25 from Enterovirus D68. When he went to bed the night before he seemed healthy. The township’s health officer said Eli was “asymptomatic and fine.” He died the next morning. More than a week after his death, the CDC confirmed the presence of Enterovirus D68, a disease that hundreds of children have been diagnosed with since August. It was the first reported fatality definitely linked to Enterovirus D68. Enterovirus D68 usually causes symptoms of a common cold. It has also been attributed to a severe respiratory illnesses transmitted by saliva, mucus and other bodily secretions comparable to the transmission of the flu. Enterovirus D68 is one of many viruses that can cause respiratory illnesses.
