Merchants are not the only targets for data breaches. Over the past few days more information has come to light regarding the data that was pulled from JP Morgan Chase Companies servers. The original estimate was limited to approximately one million personal accounts being compromised with only account holder contact information being obtained. The good news is that sensitive information, social security and account numbers, have not been exposed. Unfortunately the estimated number of accounts breached has been revised to an astonishing 76 million personal accounts and near 8 million small business accounts. Also affected are an estimated 465,000 cardholders of Chase Prepaid Cards. While there have been no reports of any unusual activity within the affected accounts, social engineering powered by accurate contact details will make it easier for scammers to pass themselves off as a legitimate organization and gain access to far more sensitive data. Though the full scope of this breach may not be seen for some time, JP Morgan is offering one year of credit monitoring services to its customers as a precaution.
