Merimbula roundabout on the way Friday 14 June 2013 Bega Valley Shire Council has confirmed plans to construct a roundabout in Merimbula at the Reid Street and Merimbula Drive intersection. The planned roundabout forms part of the Merimbula CBD bypass design scheduled for assessment by the Roads and Maritime Service. “The Reid Street roundabout forms an integral part of the Merimbula CBD bypass design,” Mayor Bill Taylor said. “The two traffic accidents that occurred last week in Merimbula have caused significant community concern, and understandably many people are asking what Council is doing to improve road safety in the area. “Merimbula residents will be relieved to know that a roundabout at the Reid Street and Merimbula Drive intersection is planned for construction next year. “The final bypass design is, however, subject to approval by the NSW Roads and Maritime Service. “Additional infrastructure can only go some way towards improving road safety. Statistics show that driving within the legal limits, driver awareness and driving to the conditions are the best way to avoid being involved in an accident. “It’s important to note that both of Friday’s accidents in Merimbula were the result of driver error. “I urge all road users in the shire to please drive safely. Through improving our roads and driving with all road users in mind we can significantly reduce the frequency of injury and death on our roads,” Cr Taylor said.
