Merry Christmas everyone! No, I am not delusional. I believe that Jesus Christ was born in the spring, and today is spring. In Israel, it’s warm at night this time of year. The “shepherds attending their flocks by night” is possible now, but quite difficult in December and January. Since Constantine pronounced the 25th of December (the 10th month on the Augustine calendar), it has been celebrated by the church. It was not called “Christmas” until around 1038. December 25th is the birth of the goddess Mithra, and marks the end of the celebration of Saturnalia (Saturn). Constantine wanted to diminish the celebration by announcing that Christ was born on that day, and thus introduce Him to the pagan time of Mithra. A noble effort, but one that has backfired. The Christmas trees were introduced in the 1830’s to quiet the boisterous crowds of New York celebrating the nativity; one assumes to get them off the street and back into houses. The tree was not borrowed from the pagan Germans as once thought. The Knickerbocker Merchants brought in the idea of Santa Claus, one might guess to increase sales of gifts, and the character was borrowed from a book of Clement Thomas Moore, “A Visit from St. Nicholas.” Thus we now celebrate Mithra through Santa Claus every December 25th, and the greed of buying stuff for others in hopes of getting stuff back
