***** Message****Sunday, March 23rd, 10:30am HOW BIG IS GOLIATH? 1 Samuel 17 - Selected Scriptures (The MESSAGE & NKJV) 1 Samuel 17:4, 24, 37, 45, 49-50 4 A giant nearly ten feet tall stepped out from the Philistine line into the open, Goliath from Gath. 5 He had a bronze helmet on his head and was dressed in armor — 126 pounds of it! (THE MESSAGE BIBLE) .......24 And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him and were dreadfully afraid. 37 Moreover David said, The Lord, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine. 45 Then David said to the Philistine, You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 49 Then David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone; and he slung it and struck the Philistine in his forehead, so that the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the earth. 50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him. ILLUSTRATION: Mom was reading to her 5 year old son, Doug, the Bible story of David and Goliath. Little Doug became more and more intrigued by the size and strength of the giant. As his mom concluded her reading of the story, Doug jumped from the couch and began flexing his 5 year old muscular arms! Later, as she tucked Doug in bed and kissed him goodnight, she saw the glimmer of imagination in his eyes. A couple of days later, an excited little Doug came running into the house carrying a small stick in his hands. Momma, Momma, he exclaimed, I am as big as Goliath! I am! I am! Doug! Really? How do you know you are as big as Goliath? MOM, I MADE MY OWN RULER!” * ARE WE MEASURING OUR ABILITY, OUR STRENGTH, OUR CALLING, OUR MINISTRY BY OUR OWN RULER? * ARE WE MEASURING OUR INDIVIDUAL, PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS CHRIST BY OUR OWN RULER? * ARE WE MEASURING THE POTENTIAL AND EFFECTIVENESS OF OUR CHURCH, TROY FIRST ASSEMBLY OF GOD, BY OUR OWN RULER? * ARE WE MEASURING GODS RIGHTEOUSNESS, HOLINESS, AND CHARACTER BY OUR OWN RULER? * ARE WE REALLY AS BIG AS GOLIATH? LETS TALK ABOUT IT. > Psalms 39:4 Lord, make me to know my end, And what is the measure of my days, That I may know how frail I am. > 2 Corinthians 10:12 For we dare not class ourselves or compare ourselves with those who commend themselves. But they, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise. > 1 Thessalonians 4:7 For God did not call us to uncleanness, but in holiness. > Hebrews 12:14-15 Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: 15 looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; > Ephesians 4:7 But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christs gift. HOW ARE WE ULTIMATELY MEASURED? > John 14:6 Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. > Matthew 16:24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. > Matthew 10:38 And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. > 1 Corinthians 1:18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. HOW BIG IS GOLIATH? 1 John 4:4 You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.
