Message from Off the Edge-- ITS Kwanzaa Times: In 1965 Maulana Karenga created Kwanzaa as the first specifically African-American holiday. According to Karenga, the name Kwanzaa derives from the Swahili phrase matunda ya kwanza, meaning first fruits of the harvest. Its not a religious holiday but built on Spiritual values of the Bible. and principles which guided our ancestors through trails, tribulations and percussions of the past; and allowed them to make it against all odds. Habari Gani-Means whats the news: Day 1. Umoja (Unity) (To strive for and maintain unity in the family, community, nation, and race). Think how great it would be if we stuck together, in spite of our differences. Day 2. KUJICHAULIA-(Self-Determination)To define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves, and speak for ourselves; instead of letting others speak, Day 3. ULIMA (Collective work and responsibility): To build and maintain our community together and make our brothers and sisters problems our problems, and to solve them together. Day 4. UJAMMA-(Cooperative Economics) To build and maintain our own stores, shops, and other businesses and profit from them together. Day 5. NIA (Purpose) To make our collective vocation the building and developing of our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness. Day 6. KUUMBA (Creativity) To do always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it. We are blessed to be the most gifted, talented, creative people ever; but we must get back to using what God gave us to improve our family, and community.
