Message sent to Trimet: I got on bus #72 heading north from SE 82nd and Duke at around 12:40pm on Monday, September 1st. The bus number is 2604. At SE 82nd and Schiller stop, an old man using a walker attempted to get on the bus, but was told by the driver to wait for the next bus because the bus was full. The old manstill tried to enter, but the driver told him not to. Then the driver invited a party of three--a woman and two children--standing behind the old man to skip the line and come in, while still insisting that there was no room for the walker. After the three walked in, I counted six empty seats in the bus. The front section of the bus (which is reserved for the disabled and elderly) was filled, but most of them were not visibly disabled or elderly and could have easily moved to any of the empty seats. There was one passenger with a scooter, and I had crutches, but there were no other passangers with mobility equipments, so there definitely was a room for a walker. I believe that the drivers action constitutes a discrimination on the basis of disability and should be investigated.
