In the past two days, the APD has taken at least five calls about suspicious activity by door-to-door home alarm salesmen. Initial reports are that salesmen who are working for an alarm company have contacted people that already have an alarm system in their home. They use the alarm company’s yard sign displayed to identify them. The “salesman” explains that the homeowner’s system needs to be replaced or upgraded, in one case using the false statement that the home owner’s original company had been purchased by another company. They entered the home and changed the alarm system to another company, even obtaining a new contract. In another case, the home owner let them into the home to look at the system, but became suspicious, called the alarm company, and found that the man did not work for his contracted company. At this point, the APD has made contact with one salesman reported to the police and found that he did not have the proper state license to sell or install alarms, and did not have the required city solicitors permit. Salesmen that do not have correct permits may be out of compliance with state law and have not had their criminal background checked. There may be other criminal violations such as fraud and theft. At this point, there is no reason to believe that the alarm companies that the salesmen claim to represent sanction this business practice. At least two company names have been used. Two local alarm companies have reported that they would not ever send a representative to a customer’s door without an appointment. If someone comes to your door and says they work for your current alarm company, contact the company. Ask the “salesman” for the blue, page-sized City of Amarillo Solicitors permit and identification to match the permit. Each salesman must carry a permit and identification and provide it to YOU if asked. If the person is out of compliance or you suspect he is not with your alarm company, call the Amarillo Police Department at 378-3038. Please discuss this suspicious activity with friends and older relatives that might fall prey to this fraud. Remember that a blue City of Amarillo permit does not guarantee the quality of any work or product, but it does document that the person’s criminal background and appropriate licenses have been reviewed at the Amarillo Police Department. A reproduction of this permit is attached for APDs Nixle subscribers... Contact Information: Sgt.
