Message this Sunday: Jesus meets with Nicodemus and tells him in order to be saved, all people must be born again. John the Baptist tells disciples that Jesus is the Messiah.1- Jesus Explains the plan of Salvation Jn.3:1-21- A man named Nicodemus visits Jesus by night.A- The credentials of Nicodemus(v.1) He is both a member of the Jewish Sanhedrin and Pharisee. Joh 3:1 NOW THERE was a certain man among the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler (a leader, an authority) among the Jews, (amp) Jewish Sanhedrin and Pharisee. mean”Sanhedrin Jewish council that operated in Roman Palestine from the time of the Maccabees (с 165 BC) to the end of the patriarchate (AD 425).While the term refers to the supreme Jewish court, the Sanhedrins exact composition and powers religious, judicial, and legislative are reported variously in different sources. It is mentioned in various books of the Bible (Mark, Luke, Acts) as having taken part in or adjudicated the trials of Jesus, St. Peter the Apostle, and St. John the Baptist. According to Talmudic sources, the Great Sanhedrin was a court of 71 sages that met on fixed occasions in the Temple of Jerusalem, acting as a religious legislative body, trial court, and administrator of rituals. B- The confession of Nicodemus (v.2) He acknowledge that Jesus is from God because of his miracles. Joh 3:2 Who came to Jesus at night and said to Him, Rabbi, we know and are certain that You have come from God [as] a Teacher; for no one can do these signs (these wonderworks, these miracles--and produce the proofs) that You do unless God is with him. (amp) C- The command to Nicodemus (v.3) Jesus says he needs the new birth. Joh 3:3 Jesus answered him, I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, that unless a person is born again (anew, from above), he cannot ever see (know, be acquainted with, and experience) the kingdom of God.(amp) D- The confusion of Nicodemus (v.4) He confuses spiritual both with physical birth. 1. If there is confusion about something, it is not clear what the true situation is, especially because people believe different things. “Collins Cobuild English Dictionary” Joh 3:4 Nicodemus said to Him, How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter his mothers womb again and be born? E- The chastening of Nicodemus (v.9-13) Jesus chides him for not knowing these things even though he is a respected Jewish teacher. chastening 1. A chastening experience makes you regret that you have behaved badly or stupidly. From this chastening experience he learnt some useful lessons. F- The clarification for Nicodemus (v.5-8, 14-15) Jesus employs three illustrations to explain the new birth to Nicodemus. 1- A physical illustration (v.5-7) Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the Kingdom of God. 2- A natural illustration (v. Just as you don’t know where the wind comes from or where is going, so it is impossible to explain being born of the Spirit. 3- A scriptural illustration (v.14-15) As Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so must the Son of men be lifted up. Lifted up - Erected on a pole. Placed on high, So that it might be seen by the people. The serpent - The image of a serpent made of brass. In the wilderness - Near the land of Edom. In the desert and desolate country to the south of Mount Hor, Num_21:4. Even so - In a similar manner and with a similar design. He here refers, doubtless, to his own death. Compare Joh_12:32; Joh_8:28. The points of resemblance between his being lifted up and that of the brass serpent seem to be these: 1. In each case those who are to be benefited can he aided in no other way. The bite of the serpent was deadly, and could be healed only by looking on the brass serpent; and sin is deadly in its nature, and can be removed only by looking on the cross. 2. The mode of their being lifted up. The brass serpent was in the sight of the people. So Jesus was exalted from the earth raised on a tree or cross. 3. The design was similar. The one was to save the life, the other the soul; the one to save from temporal, the other from eternal death. 4. The manner of the cure was similar. The people of Israel were to look on the serpent and be healed, and so sinners are to look on the Lord Jesus that they may be saved. Must - It is proper; necessary; indispensable, if men are saved. Compare Luk_24:26; Luk_22:42. The Son of man - The Messiah. G- The conclusion for Nicodemus (v.16-21) Jesus now summarizes both the subjects of salvation and condemnation! (tab) 1- The persons (v.16) Joh 3:16 This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. A- The Father gave his Son (v.16a) This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. (msg) B- The Son will give his life (v.16b) And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. (tab) A- It is not to condemn sinners (v.17a) God didnt go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. (msg) B- It is to convert sinners (v.17b) He came to help, to put the world right again. (tab) A- Condemnation for those who reject Christ (v.18b-20) v.8b he that believeth not hath been judged already, because he hath not believed on the name of the only begotten Son of God. Joh 3:20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, and cometh not to the light, lest his works should be reproved. (asv) B- Salvation for those who receive Christ (v.18a-21) v.8a He that believeth on him is not judged, Joh 3:21 But he that doeth the truth cometh to the light, that his works may be made manifest, that they have been wrought in God. (asv) 11- John Exalts the Person of Salvation (v.22-36) A- The argument (v.22-27) A debate occurs among John’s disciples concerning which baptism is valid- those performed by John or Jesus. B- The affirmation “confirmation” (27-36) John once again gives testimony concerning the greatness of Jesus. “Merriam-Websters Collegiate Dictionary” affirmation PRONUNCIATION: 15th century 1 a : the act of affirming b : something affirmed : a positive assertion 2 : a solemn declaration made under the penalties of perjury by a person who conscientiously declines taking an oath. 1- Jesus is the bridegroom, while John is but a friend of the bridegroom (v.27-29) Joh 3:27 Sumagot si Juan at sinabi, Hindi makatatanggap ng anoman ang isang tao, malibang itoy ipinagkaloob sa kaniya mula sa langit. (tab) 2- Jesus must become greater and greater, while John must become less and less (v.30-36) Joh 3:30 Siyay kinakailangang dumakila, ngunit akoy kinakailangang bumaba.
