Metservice have updated the Warning this morning for Northland. SEVERE WEATHER WARNING. ISSUED BY MetService AT 9:27am 12-Sep-2014 URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST IN: Northland, Coromandel Peninsula, Bay Of Plenty Rotorua {MEDIA} BURST OF HEAVY RAIN FOR NORTHLAND TODAY AND COROMANDEL PENINSULA AND BAY OF PLENTY FROM THIS EVENING THROUGH TO SATURDAY A complex trough of low pressure over the Tasman Sea is forecast to move slowly east across New Zealand over the next few day. A moist northerly flow ahead of this trough is expected to bring a period of heavy rain to northern and western parts of both islands. Currently, the heaviest falls are expected about northeastern parts of Northland today and Coromandel Peninsula and Bay of Plenty from this evening through to Saturday. Rainfalls of 60 to 140mm are likely in these regions, especially about higher areas. People are advised that this heavy rain is likely to cause rivers to rise rapidly and may produce localised surface flooding and slips. In the 10 hours from 11am to 9pm Friday, expect 60 to 80mm to accumulate, especially about the hill country. Peak intensities 10 to 20mm/hr this afternoon and early evening. Note, showers are expected on Saturday, especially affecting western areas, where some are likely to be heavy and possibly thundery. AREA/S AFFECTED: COROMANDEL PENINSULA FORECAST: Rain is expected to become heavy this evening and then ease Saturday morning. In the 12 hours from 8pm Friday to 8am Saturday, expect 80 to 100mm about the ranges with 50mm in low lying areas. Peak intensities 10 to 20mm/hr are likely overnight or early Saturday morning about higher areas. Note, further showers are expected on Saturday, especially during the afternoon and early evening when some are likely to be heavy and possibly thundery. AREA/S AFFECTED: BAY OF PLENTY FORECAST: Rain is expected to become heavy west of Te Puke this evening and further east tonight. West of Te Puke in the 12 hours from 9pm Friday to 9am Saturday, expect 80 to 100mm about higher areas and especially the ranges. East of Te Puke in the 24 hours from midnight Friday to midnight Saturday, expect 100 to 140mm about the ranges. Peak intensities of 10 to 20mm/hr are likely for a time about higher areas.
