Mga Cebuanos, dagdag ingat po sa sinkholes..baka meron pag ibang lugar na nangangaib... CEBU CITY -- Its creepy how two sinkholes appeared in the towns of Badian and Alcantara in southern Cebu; this was after tropical storm Seniang hit the area last Tuesday, as reported in Interaksyon. One of the sinkholes which was discovered in Barangay Manduyong, Badian reportedly measures 20 feet wide and 10 feet deep, as disclosed by Dr. Eddie Llamedo, the spokesman for the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 7. Likewise, another sinkhole was reported by residents in Barangay Cabadiangan, Alcantara, and it was estimated to be around 30 feet deep, as disclosed by Dominico Caburnay, Alcantaras planning and development coordinator. The sinkhole reportedly extends to the adjacent barangay of Bala in Moalboal. However, Dr. Llamedo plays safe in saying that he could not really state it as officially a sinkhole until it has been confirmed by some geologists. The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB 7), he further said, recommended that the local government units and the police cordon off and monitor the sinkholes to ensure safety in the area. A team of geologists are due to assess the sinkholes. He adds that “Sinkholes may have opened up after Seniang struck Cebu. Sinkholes usually appear if there is ground shaking or earthquake and when the ground is oversaturated due to heavy rain.” Those who live within 20-meter radius of the sinkholes are thereby advised to relocate to safer areas than risk their lives. sinkhole In November of this year, a sinkhole was discovered also in Badian town, south Cebu which initially measured only five meters wide and 10 meters deep. However, it continued to grow bigger and was 12 meters wide a few days after, as disclosed also by Dr. Eddie Llamedo.
