Mga Taga-UP: From Dean Michael Tan of CSSP: To our faculty, staff and students Last night one of our political science faculty, Perlie Frago, was attacked and robbed at the AS parking lot. Her assailants tied her up and drove around the campus in her car before robbing and leaving her, still with handcuffs. She was fortunately able to find a way to make her way back to the political science department and get help. I first learned about the incident from the security guard at Palma on night duty, but he did not know who the professor was. On my way home I got a text from Ruth Rico, the political science chair, who told me it was Perlie who had been robbed and she gave me more details. I then communicated with Chancellor Caesar Saloma and told him we need immediate measures to prevent such incidents, mainly more lights in the area, as well as additional SSB. (The parking lot is not part of the security guards assigned areas.) The incident has been reported to the police and according to the Chancellor, there are leads that have taken the police to Cainta. He also said they will put in more lights and security personnel. According to Ruth, Perlie was also distracted by a child as she was about to open her car door. I have informed the Chancellor about this and suggest they tackle this issue of street children loitering in different places on campus, often asking (and harassing) faculty, students and visitors. Do take extra precautions in Diliman, not just on campus but in the areas around us. Last September 30 one of our anthropology students was robbed, and stabbed, in the Philcoa area. The campus itself becomes more dangerous during the semestral break, when there are fewer people around. If you are still on campus after dusk, avoid walking alone in isolated areas. Ask the security guards to accompany you to the parking lot to your car. If you are taking public transportation, go to a well-lit place, preferably with other people, to take a ride. I am particularly worried about taking taxis at night. Our security guards can help you to get a taxi and they have been instructed to get the name of the taxi driver and their license plate before you take your ride. I will keep you updated on developments on the robbery, and on security measures.
