Mi Manspasi Boskopu Its 151 years today that slavery was finally abolished in Suriname and the Netherlands Antilles by the Dutch government. It is 141 years that this truly became effective though. since the enslaved were forced to keep working for yet another 10 years, under the states supervision. Still it is a festive day today, a national holiday (although not in Holland, ahumm!) But there is also a lot to commemorate and reflect... This is our communal history, as we all (should) know by now. I honor, I thank and I pay my respect to my ancestors through whom Im here today. I celebrate Freedom, but at the same time Im praying for those who are still enduring the hardships of slavery today in so many different ways and forms..young and old, men, women and children...I pray for the more than 50(!) million people (globally) who have fled from their homes, their land, trying to find safety elsewhere, risking their very lives...were talking TODAY, July 1st 2014!.... So lets celebrate, but also remember...lets not turn our backs or close our ears and eyes...No matter how hopeless the worlds situation may seem: lets refuse to surrender to negative energy!
