Miami-Dade parents and educators…. If you are concerned about all the assessments and would like to have your voice heard, NOW IS THE TIME!!! Tuesday, OCTOBER 7, 2014 REGULAR BOARD The agenda item that parents should request to speak to is the following: H-2 ASSESSMENT AND ACCOUNTABILITY (revised) ACTION PROPOSED BY CHAIR PERLA TABARES HANTMAN: That The School Board of Miami-Dade County, Florida: 1) include in the Boards 2015 Legislative Program as a priority, the reform of Floridas system of assessment and accountability in accordance with the recommendations adopted September 3, 2014 and in the best interest of the students and teachers of Miami-Dade County Public Schools; 2) include in the 2015 Legislative Program as a priority the elimination of unfunded mandates; 3) request that the Superintendent update the School Board regarding developments in the assessment and accountability debate as information becomes available; and 4) authorize the Superintendent to send correspondence to the representatives of the State Board of Education communicating the Boards request for a comprehensive review of the entire assessment program. You can also speak during the public hearing part which usually starts around 4:30. For agenda items, you have a strict 2 minute time frame. For public hearing, you have 3 minutes. IMPORTANT: You will need to sign up to speak at before the meeting begins at 1PM. If you dont arrive before the meeting time, you will not be allowed to speak. Tips for preparing your speech. 1. Think about what you will say, what is the take away from your speech? 2. Write it out early. Give yourself time to edit your words, refocus your statements. 3. Remember you have limited time, so your statements need to be clear and concise. (2 minutes for an agenda item, 3 minutes for a public hearing speech. 4. Practice your speech, OUT LOUD. I cant tell you how many times I have read my speech through in my head and I fit the time constraints, but when I read it out loud, I dont. 5. Have fun, its your civic duty to speak up and to let our school board understand some of the issues facing our district and its people. You have a voice, so lets use it!!!
