I was in the ER last night with a friend whose son had been there 24 hours after she had to call police after he came after her (and tried to cut himself) with an exacto knife. First she had to get between the police, who were already pulling their batons, and her son. Then 24 hours before a bed opened up. Yet last night, while waiting with them for transport, I overhear the doctors engrossed in the case of a 75 year old man who felt pain in his lower back after swinging his golf club in Hawaii. For me it illustrated the screwed up priorities of our health care system: A severely mentally ill boy languishes in an ER hallway for more than a day while an old man with back pain gets immediate care. cbsnews/news/mentally-ill-youth-in-crisis/.
