Michel Jackson, Lewis Carrol, Beckett, and the Art of Living: I - TopicsExpress

Michel Jackson, Lewis Carrol, Beckett, and the Art of Living: I love Michael Jackson (Beat it) and Lewis Carrol (Alice in Wonderland). Both believe that man is a creator of systems, and as such, he must commit himself entirely to his own creation. Another genius whom I love too and who thinks exactly the same is Beckett. Live and invent, says the Irish titan in his Malone Dies. Now the three of them believe that because life is not a given, living is bound to be an art. To say that living is an art is a highly serious business, not a form of escapism, for, as Lewis Carrol insists: Giving up such heuristic systems, is tantamount to sacrificing both rational thought and moral behaviour - and plunges one into bestial violence. Hence the vital character of art! (Note to our PhD students: Knowing that many Tunisian students love Samuel Beckett, it might be interesting to consider him (Beckett) in conjunction with Lewis Carrol. Just a suggestion!)
