Michelin has opened a new facility to produce its Tweel airless tyre. Conceived by Michelin research engineers in the United States, the Tweel is a non-pneumatic radial tyre that brings together the tyre and wheel assembly in one solid unit. The tyre is to be built at Michelin facility in South Carolina, United States. The tyre comprises a rigid hub connected to a shear beam by flexible, deformable polyurethane spokes, all functioning as a single unit. The Tweel is designed for commercial use, such as landscaping, construction and agriculture. It has been specified as original equipment on certain John Deere commercial mowers. The Tweel, according to The Badmus Autonovo, UK, was originally introduced as a concept at the 2004 Paris motor show. Michelin claims it is the only commercial product offering the advantages of no maintenance, no compromise and no downtime. It performs with traditional radial tyre technology but requires no air. Michelin said that it also provides longer wear life than conventional pneumatic tyre. Watchout for Belly2016AF. Design by Ismail Ibn Badmus
