Michigan is one of the leaders in providing foster/former youth with tuition free post-secondary. Jasmine reminds us what a difference this kind of support means and why most young people are not ready to be on their own without support: It was pretty scary, to be honest, she says. Every 18- and 19-year-old thinks theyre ready, but youre not. Youre not ready for shutoff notices. Youre not ready for eviction notices. Youre not ready for car repossessions. Uqdah was one of the more than 20,000 young people who age out of foster care in the U.S. every year. For most, the outcomes arent great. Theyre heading out into the world with next to nothing — no family, no money, no support.
