Micro-enterpreneurs are hustling against great odds in Kampala - TopicsExpress

Micro-enterpreneurs are hustling against great odds in Kampala city. Although my parents spoke hard and long against street-food, I love my fair share of the tasty delicacies sold along the roads. Nsenene-hawkers are now in season. I am a great supporter of this business. I have also taught my children to support hawkers of delicious fried grasshoppers seasoned with diced onion and a pinch of salt. Carrying their colourless plastic tiffins brimming with sizzling nsenene, these hawkers stand at busy junctions all over Kampala city. They have foil dishes and a serving spoon ready to do business. The trick to beat KCCA wardens is to invite these hawkers into the car and then the haggling begins. I am feisty and steady when bargaining to bring down the price. I am also an expert at asking the hawker to first give all passengers in the car a taste-sample locally called jaribu or endoza before the actual serving. And I beg for another round of enyoongeza to each passenger after the main serving. After payment, the hawker lets himself out the car and goes on to his next sales deal. We are left munching away with abandon.
