(WGGB) — “Microphones Up, Guns Down” was the name and message of a youth workshop in Springfield Saturday afternoon. Dozens of young people came out to Springfield College for the event. It’s meant to help provide young people with the creative tools necessary to help build up their self-esteem and to express themselves in a positive way. And that, in turn, is what they hope will also stop the violence. “We found that if you build up the confidence of a young person, you can give them the power that they need to be heard without being negative,” said Lamara Hunter, an organizer for the event. “They can do it in a positive way.” “Microphones Up, Guns Down” is a nationwide initiative empowering young people from inner cities to overcome adversity and let their voices be heard though art instead of violence.
