Midlands STEM Institute Schedules Information Sessions The Midlands STEM Institute (MSI), a new public charter school scheduled to open in Fall 2014, will hold several information sessions in the next month. This new tuition-free, public school option will be available to any South Carolina student who wishes to attend. “Midlands STEM Institute will offer a unique STEM curriculum unlike any other in the area. Programs such as “STEM in the Gym”, “Gateway to Technology” and “Project Lead the Way” will prepare students to further their education and for the careers of tomorrow”, said board chairman Kevin Thomas. The school will have traditional grade levels as well as multiage options. MSI will serve students in grades Kindergarten through 5th, adding a grade each year until the school is K-12 in 2021. In contrast to a public magnet school, a public charter school does not have admissions requirements. Parents and students choose public charter schools, which are tuition free for students of public school age. MSI Board Member Marie Milam says, “MSI will prepare students to work in the exciting world of nuclear engineering, chemistry, nanotechnology and other fulfilling careers”.
