Midnapore College receives autonomy KOLKATA: University Grants Commission has given Midnapore College an autonomous status . It is only the fourth aided college to be granted the tag after St Xaviers College, Ramkrishna Mission Narendrapur and RKM Belur. The college was established in 1873 and is affiliated to Vidyasagar University, said a senior higher education department official. After receiving the autonomy, Midnapore College will now be free from any bindings as is applied on a affiliating college. The college from 2014-2015 session will be allowed to frame its own curiculam and conduct their own examinations. The results too will be published by the college themselves. Only the marksheet will be published with the approval of Vidyasagar University, added the official. The inspection was done by UGC earlier and the approval was sent to the state government on Monday. As part of a new vision Midnapore College will now function as an autonomous college, informed another source in the higher education department. Earlier when St Xaviers College was given permission to become autonomous a teacher had pointed out, receiving autonomy is beneficial for any college since then it can break free from the shackles of regular delay in conducting exams and publishing results which is a norm in many state universities.
