Midnight Cowboy, 1969. Dir. John Schlesinger. Upon its initial release Midnight Cowboy was a scandal, but it was so good, so fresh that people took notice. It changed the landscape of what was acceptable in a serious movie. Unless something has changed, Midnight Cowboy stands as the only X-rated movie to win an Academy Award (3 actually). Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman give fantastic performances as two unlikely hustlers trying to eke out a living in a freaky New York City. Hoffman is exceptional as a man who has lost his way, but still tries to maintain a semblance of dignity amidst the squalor and depravity of his surroundings. Voight is equally moving as a young man haunted by his past and unable to get a grip on where his life is taking him. As the story progresses, these two characters come to depend on each other and their bond grows much closer than would be expected. In the end its more a tragedy than anything else.
