Mike Martinez, Item number 74 on the Council Agenda this week will allow the City of Austin to join Dallas County, Congressman Mark Veasey, and seven other plaintiffs in the lawsuit to protect voting rights here in Texas. The Texas Voter ID law that passed the state legislature in 2011 creates a barrier for students, people of color, low-income residents, and the elderly. It also makes the assumption that Texans who do not have a state-issued ID have the time and money to take off and obtain the required underlying documents to prove eligibility. I’m proud to co-sponsor this resolution and thank Council Member Spelman for his leadership on this issue. With Council approval, the City of Austin will join the fight to protect the rights of Texans who have long had a history of being discriminated against.
