Mikel Espies Pitch Award Top Spot Chelsea of England midfielder, John Mikel Obi will not allow recurrent reports about an impeding exit from The Blues affect his enthusiasm, as the Super Eagles star has already set his sight on getting a place in the honours list for the forthcoming Nigerian Pitch Awards. Rather than belabor himself with reports at the weekend about an impending loan exit from Stamford Bridge for him and fellow-Eagles star, Victor Moses, Mikel is eager to weigh his chances of getting another feather added to his cap of honours, and spoke of his excitement at the inaugural edition of the Pitch Awards, slated for 17th November in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. Last year, Nigeria Football Federation endorsed Matchmakers Consult Limited International to stage the first-ever edition of the awards and Mikel admitted at the weekend that he is looking forward to the event. Aside a place on the roll call for top soccer stars like Mikel, the awards will also honour stalwarts in every area of the football pitch, as well as to referees, administrators, coaches, sponsors, sports-loving State Governments and other stakeholders. With glitterati of the highest level expected to grace the occasion, Mikel, who had a sterling outing at the Africa Cup of Nations and scored a brilliant goal at the FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil, says he would be happy to pick a plaque on the awards night. “Of course, I will be happy to pick up an award. It will be a real delight for me and I hope it will be a great event in every sense of the word. Awards serve as great incentives for sports people all over the world. “There is no doubt that awards compensate for all the hard work all year round. Every sports person looks forward to receiving awards which they treasure. “The Nigeria Pitch Awards has come at the right time. I am personally looking forward to the event in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State after we must have qualified for the 2014 FIFA World Cup finals. The ceremony will serve as a real gloss on our World Cup qualification,” the former Lyn Oslo of Norway midfielder enthused.
