Mikwano, nange kano kanyumidde. Put grass hoppers in a jar, seal it and watch them devour each other (#stolen). ---------------------------- Following the issuance of an incompetence certificate by the Uganda Law Society against him, the Attorney General Peter Nyombi has described the conduct of the body as being insane. During their extraordinary general meeting in August 2013, the Uganda Law Society members passed a resolution to have Nyombi suspended from the body on allegations that he had misadvised the President on appointment of Gen. Aronda Nyakairima, a serving army officer as the Internal Affairs Minister . “The nature of legal profession, one would expect the law society to have a sense of justice and exercise its role with a sober and fair mind,” Nyombi said while addressing journalists in Kampala on Thursday. “One would expect leadership that is mature, sane and well grounded in law at least better than the outfit that presided over the extraordinary general meeting of the society.” According to the Attorney General, during the August 2013 law society meeting, it was insanity that prevailed over sanity which he said was an abnormality in the day to day running of the activities of the body. “I am fully aware of the intrigue involving certain personalities that took place prior to the meeting and I know of the lawyers who steered it along the path of insanity. Many of them had different motives with some being motivated by their political orientations while others were connected to certain huge claims against government that I had put under scrutiny.” Nyombi added, “It’s a shame that these senior lawyers and academicians who regarded themselves as being competent were not aware of the provisions of the Law Society Act.” Nyombi Attacks Mbabali The Attorney General in an unusual manner attacked city lawyer Jude Mbabali whom he referred to as the leader of the group adding that he is not fit to be a lawyer. “I should have expected the leadership to live above the likes of Jude Mbabali some of whose academic qualifications have been under tight scrutiny in the recent past,” Nyombi stressed. He added, “Following the Law Society Act is something that even a 3rd year student at Makerere University would have known but the likes of Mbabali didn’t .My daughter has a master’s degree in law and she is not like Mbabali.” Nyombi therefore warned that he still stands by the opinions he has given stressing that they are legal because he has always written them after carrying out thorough research. “Its madness for a professional body like the Law Society to try to banish the author of a legal opinion merely because they have a contrary opinion instead of resolving to uncivilized means. The only sane way of challenging a legal opinion is by airing out one’s contrary opinion.” High Court judge Stephen Musota on Monday erred the Uganda Law Society for issuing a certificate of incompetence to the Attorney General and suspending him for 2 years for what they termed as misadvising the President on the reappointment of the retired ChiefJustice Benjamin Odoki and a serving army officer Gen. Aronda Nyakairima to cabinet before resigning. In his judgment, Justice Musota said that,” the Uganda Law Society had no legal authority under their act or any other law in force to discipline by way of suspension of any member or ex-official.” “The Uganda Law Society should be restrained from continued breach of the law and circulation of the impugned certificate of competence on top of being prohibited from implementing the void illegal resolutions passed by the general meeting of the society, ” partly reads the High Court judgment passed on December 15,2014. chimpreports/law-society-body-acted-insane-against-me-nyombi/
