Mildura’s Family Day Care service, which provides flexible home-based childcare and education, has recently received an overall rating of “exceeding” the Education and Care National Quality Standards. “The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development then came on a three day visit and spent time with five of our educators,” Mildura Rural City Councillor Sharyon Peart explained. “During these random visits, they looked closely at a number of indicators including relationships with children and families, educational activities, and health and safety issues.” For the last two years, one of these educators, Bronwyn Williams, has won the 2013 Excellence in Family Day Care Award for the Mildura & Murray region, and has been a state finalist. Bronwyn and many of Mildura’s other family day care educators are participants in the “Learning by Heart” WELL project. This is a joint venture between Mildura Rural City Council and SuniTAFE to help develop the skills of people working in this field.
